Sameside is the new single from folk-rocker, Cheynne Murphy, recorded by an eclectic group of Northern Rivers artists all affected by the recent devastating floods and a song inspired by the community spirit that followed. As Cheynne recalls “It was a catastrophic event. But also a hell of a lot of heart and community spirit on display. One of the collaborators was coordinating helicopter pick-ups, others were helping out in an evacuation centres, the slide player was getting supplies in a canoe , some flooded out, losing precious equipment. It was chaos. But people came together to help when there was little government support, especially at the start. With what I was witnessing first hand in my socials and with the incredible mobilisation of the mud armies I felt compelled to write something as a direct result of this community effort”.

Sameside pays its dues to the localised community flood support efforts. The overarching lyrical concept acknowledges the polarisation between people during the Covid situation with much division but the terrible crisis seemed to bring the best out in people. As Cheynne says, “In a way it was reaffirming and renewed faith in humanity because we saw incredibly brave and loving efforts ultimately prevail.” Musically, the track pays homage to the epic folk rock and roll of the 1960’s & 70’s, in the vein of Joe Cocker’s “I get by with a little help from my friends” Woodstock performance. Rockinghorse studios in the Byron Shire Hills generously sponsored the session and Cheynne got his old band back together featuring Mat Akhurst (Drums), Maurice Cernegoi (Bass) and Toby Andrews (electric guitar). Live tracks were lifted sonically by by an array of local Northern Rivers artists who donated their time and creativity, including local busking legend, Juzzie Smith on harmonica, Rich Latimer on lead electric guitar, Kelly Knight and Lucille Du Angassac on backing vocals. Guy Anderton (Lisa Hunt) provided percussion, Justin Bannister (Palm Wine Ambassadors) on organ and Kristan Burnard (Burning Hands) adding atmospherics on a lap steel guitar.
